Intrinsyc Software is demonstrating its Windows CE-based platform for mid-range mobile handsets this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The company claims its software represents the first Windows CE implementation aimed specifically at the burgeoning feature-phone market.

This appears to be the first public demonstration of the platform. Last fall, the company released a preview software development kit (SDK) to a "select group" of customers to gain final feedback prior to shipping the full product.

Intrinsyc lists the following key elements of its feature-phone platform:
        • Customizable mobile phone user interface -- the "Chameleon" UX Designer tool provides a simple way to control the handset's branding and user experience for differentiated phones.

        • Visual Studio .NET development interface -- the familiar, industry-standard tool set supports a low-risk approach to software development. Handset manufacturers can simulate an end phone design before committing to its underlying hardware.

        • Pre-integration with leading hardware platforms to include all the telephony elements and the most popular phone data applications.
Additional information on Intrinsyc's feature-phone platform and associated development tools, including an architecture block diagram and market data, are available in our earlier coverage.

        Advanced media player

Intrinsyc says the platform also supports the Implicit Media Player from Implicit Networks, said to be one of the most advanced media players available. It offers movies, music, pictures, slideshows, playlists, PVR-2-Go, UPnP, advanced trick modes, rich annotation, and full meta-data based browsing directly from a mobile phone handset, according to Intrinsyc. The Implicit Media Player is part of the Implicit Content Management Platform that includes a web service for creating and managing digital media libraries, accessing premium music and movies, and seamless photo sharing.

"By leveraging Windows CE and its leading development tools, Intrinsyc is providing a simple way to customize a common software platform," Intrinsyc VP of Mobile Software Products Randy Kath said, in a statement. "Our UX Designer supports the multiple new applications, features, and services that are in high-demand by phone consumers. The Implicit Media Player is a great example of this -- users can easily connect to the media content stored on any of their other entertainment devices, and play it straight from their phone on the go."
