[Updated Apr. 14, 2003] -- Intrinsyc Software announced a new XScale-based reference design that is meant to help companies create Windows CE .NET based Web terminals, kiosks, point-of-sale devices, tracking systems and industrial controllers.

The CerfPod 255SE consists of a single board computer based on an Intel XScale PXA255 processor plus an attached 6.4-inch backlit TFT VGA-resolution display. The SBC's features are said to include a CompactFlash slot, 16 or 32 MB Flash, 32 or 64 MB SDRAM, Audio Codec, multiple serial ports, and 10/100 Ethernet. The platform comes preloaded with Windows CE .NET and supports multiple displays.

The associated developer's kit provides a board support package, SDK, Microsoft ActiveSync, Intrinsyc i-Boot, support for IBM J9 Java Virtual Machine (JVM), plus an evaluation copy of Intrinsyc's CerfWorks device management software.

Typical applications for designs based on the platform are expected to include entertainment, vending, gaming, industrial automation, military, security, and medical imaging markets, the company said.

Intrinsyc said the design of the CerfPod 225SE is cost-optimized, so that it can provide OEMs with an off-the-shelf solution for volume production.

The CerfPod 255SE and developer's kit are available now.
