        Forklift computer gets 3G and GPS

        Sweden's JLT Mobile Computers has updated a panel PC intended for forklifts, pallet trucks, and other warehouse machinery. Still with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, the "freezer-ready" JLT1214S now offers a higher-resolution screen option and an available 3G cellular modem, according to the company.

        Also offered by Roper Mobile Technology as the Duros 1214, the JLT1214 was first introduced with a 1.0GHz Intel Celeron processor, and later updated to include a 1.6GHz Intel Atom. The newly announced JLT1214S version employs the same CPU and still has a 12-inch resistive touchscreen; however, 1024 x 768 pixel resolution is now orderable in addition to the previous 800 x 600.

        In addition, the JLT1214S is now available with integrated 3G/GRPS connectivity and a GPS receiver, according to JLT. (It still includes 802.11a/b/g/n wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.0.)

        As before, the device complies with IP65 and MIL-STD-810F standards, according to JLT. The JLT1214S resists water and dust, operates in temperatures from -30 to 55 deg. C (-22 to 122 deg. F), and tolerates 30G shocks of up to 11 milliseconds, the company says.

        According to JLT, the JLT1214S is designed for fixed mounting on forklifts or other warehouse equipment. Designed to feed off of external input power (from 18VDC to 72VDC), the device also includes a built-in UPS battery that provides 10 minutes of operation, the company says.


        Ports on the JLT1214S

        Interfaces, all mounted horizontally under a ledge at the back of the machine, as shown above -- include 10/100 Ethernet and four USB ports. A serial port is optional, and fixed storage is provided by an internal CompactFlash slot, JLT adds.
