The Khronos group has announced a software development contest, with prizes valued at over $100,000, aimd at encouraging Windows Mobile application developers to begin creating innovative graphical applications using its recently released 3D-accelerated graphics standard.

OpenGL ES targets mobile phones, handhelds, gamepads, and various other embedded devices, and supports Windows Mobile as well as other embedded OSes.

The goal of the OpenGL ES 1.1 Coding Challenge is to create an open source library of sample code and applications for hardware-accelerated OpenGL ES games, demos, and screensavers, Khronos says.

Multiple winners will be selected from each of three project categories:
        • Self-running demos -- including 3D screensavers, technological demos, and visual FX demos
        • Games -- interactive games or game proof of concepts
        • Educational demos/tutorials -- demos that help other developers learn how to code in OpenGL ES 1.1
OpenGL ES implementations for use in the challenge are available for Windows PocketPC and Smartphone 2003.

Check out the contest FAQ for more details.
