        Rugged box PC braces for global warming

        Kontron announced a fanless industrial box computer that runs on an Intel Atom N270 and can withstand temperatures of between five and 140 deg. F (-15 to 60 deg. C). The Kontron Embedded Box PC CB 752 is equipped with dual gigabit Ethernet ports and six USB 2.0 ports, plus serial, optional CAN bus, and Mini PCIe connectivity, says the company.

        The Kontron Embedded Box PC CB 752 was introduced in November, but has now been upgraded with extended temperature support, says Kontron. The system is said to be suitable for demanding, applications in transportation, automation, medical, POS, and digital signage that require a wide temperature range.

        The CB 752 is also appropriate for many other unheated and non air-conditioned work environments. It operates over a range from 5 to 140 deg. F (-15 to 60 deg. C), the company says.

        The Kontron Embedded Box PC CB 752 is built around a processor better known for its use in netbooks -- the versatile 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270. The N270 is mated with the usual 945GSE/ICH7M chipset, and equipped with 2GB of DDR2 RAM, says Kontron. The computer offers a CompactFlash socket, as well as a shock-mounted, 2.5-inch storage bay for hard disk drives or solid-state drives, says the company.

        The CB 752 is available with a Mini PCI-Express (PCIe) slot, as well as an optional WLAN module equipped with two rear-facing antennas and non-volatile NVRAM, says Kontron. Video support includes a front-facing VGA port and optional DVI port, as well as a rear-facing audio port, says the company.

        All the remaining I/O is front-facing except for two of the six USB 2.0 ports and GPIO, which face to the rear, says Kontron. I/O is said to include dual gigabit Ethernet ports, six USB 2.0 ports, and dual RS232 ports. Options include a RS422/485 port and a CAN bus interface, says the company.

        Housed in a rugged aluminum chassis measuring 9.84 x 6.30 x 2.95 inches (250 x 160 x 75mm), the CB 752 is said to weigh about 11 pounds (five kilograms). Desktop, wall-mount, and front-mount options are said to be available.

        The computer runs on a 24 VDC power supply, and is claimed to offer a MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) rate of 100,000 hours (about 11 years).

        Availability

        No pricing or availability information was made available on the Kontron Embedded Box PC CB 752. Operating system support was listed as including Windows XP, Windows XP Embedded, Windows CE 6.0, and Linux.
