Kontron announced an ARM9-based panel PC designed for HMI (human machine interface) applications. The Pico Client has a 5.7-inch touchscreen with VGA resolution, two 10/100 Ethernet ports, a USB port, and an RS232/485 port, according to the company.

Kontron's Pico Client is the latest in a series of HMI devices that has previously included Micro Client and Micro Client II systems, variously equipped with ARM and x86 processors. Apparently intended to come in at the low end of the product line, the Pico Client combines an unnamed, ARM926EJ-S processor clocked at 200MHz with a 5.7-inch, 640 x 480 resistive touchscreen.

According to Kontron's data sheet, the Pico Client includes 32MB of RAM and 16MB of flash storage -- something of a blast from the past, but apparently adequate to run the included build of Windows CE 6.0. Storage may be expanded via a SD/MMC slot, the company adds.

Kontron says the "cost-optimzed" Pico Client includes two 10/100 Ethernet ports, an RS232/485 port, and a USB 1.1 port. It's said the device's front panel meets IP65 standard for resistance to water and dust, while shocks of up to 15G (11ms duration) may be withstood while the Pico Client is operating, and 30G when it is not.Features and specifications listed by Kontron for the Pico Client include:

        • Processor -- ARM926EJ-S clocked at 200MHz
        • Memory -- 32MB of RAM and 16MB of flash storage
        • Display -- 5.7-inch resistive touchscreen with 640 x 480 resolution
        • Expansion -- SD/MMC card
        • Networking -- 2 x 10/100 Ethernet
        • Other I/O:
          • 1 x RS232/485
          • 1 x USB 1.1 client
        • Power supply -- 24VDC
        • Operating temperature -- 32 to 122 deg. F (0 to 50 deg. C)
        • Dimensions -- 8.34 x 6.14 x 1.96 inches (212 x 156 x 50mm)
        Further information

Kontron did not release pricing for the Pico Client, but said the device is now available in EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa), and will be available in North America and APAC (Asia and Pacifc) in the second quarter of this year. More information on the device may be found on the company's website, here.
