A new set-top box (STB) from LG Electronics will soon be deployed by Korea Telecom (KT) in the Seoul area. LG's Windows CE powered DOD2000 STB seemlessly delivers DVD-quality video on demand (VOD) over broadband, and also provides home gateway and home automation services, LG says.

The same device is also being marketed by Tcom&DTVro of Korea as the TD800.

KT claims its "Home N" broadband home networking service is the world's first to offer wired and wireless high-speed Internet access, high-quality video and audio, home automation, and two-way TV using a home gateway. With monthly fees starting under 16,000 won (under $14 USD), KT's goal is to attract a total of 100,000 customers to the Home N service by year-end, and to extend next-generation services throughout Korea next year.

Features and specifications of the LG-manufactured STB include:
        • Video:

A key component used in the DOD2000/TD800 is a Sigma Designs EML8620L media processor chip, which implements IP video, DVD, MPEG-4, Windows Media Video (WMV9) decoding, and other functions. Video functions provided by the EML8620L include NTSC TV resolution output (720x480) of MPEG-1/2, DVD-video, or video CD playback, and 8-bit alpha blending of on-screen display and graphics information. Audio decoding includes Dolby Digital, CD audio, MPEG-1 layers 2 and 3, and DTS. A block diagram of the EML8620L internal functions is here.
