(Click here for a larger view of APSI's M-480)Like many other PMPs hailing from Korea, such as the
Maxian M1T and
Nurian F1 Avatar, APSI's M-480 uses the Windows CE 5.0 core OS, adding a custom user interface (UI). In this case, the UI is said to be finger-operable, and to provide vibratory feedback when the screen is touched.

According to APSI, the M-480 is based on TI's 400MHz OMAP2530, which combines an ARM11 core with a DSP. Surprisingly, we haven't encountered the OMAP2530 in a device before, and find independent information on it to be surprisingly elusive. However, Bsquare has offered the chip in one of its many
DevKit development platforms, the
DevKit 2530, while Mistral includes it in its
OMAP2 EVM, an "evaluation module" like the similar
OMAP35X EVM pictured at right.
In any case, the M-480 is also said to include 256MB of DDR2 memory and 128MB of flash storage. Further storage is provided by a 1.8-inch hard disk drive, available in 30GB or 60GB capacities.
The M-480's 4.8-inch touchscreen display has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, according to APSI. The device, which also includes stereo speakers, is said to play back video at up to 30 frames per second, in the usual bevy of formats including DivX, MPEG4, and WMV. Meantime, audio playback is augmented by
SRS Wow HD processing, the company says.
The M-480 also is said to receive Korean T-DMB television broadcasts. While the PMP does not appear to provide access to a standard Windows CE desktop, or installation of third-party Windows CE binaries, it does allow Microsoft Word and PowerPoint documents to be viewed, according to APSI.

The M-480 comes with an optional car cradle (left) and 3D navigation capabilities (right)

M&soft.
