        Industrial PC gets 3G, dual-core Atom

        Lanner announced a fanless industrial PC with available GPS and 3G cellular capacities, plus a dual-core 1.66GHz Intel Atom D510 CPU. The LEC-7100 has a CompactFlash slot and 2.5-inch HDD (hard disk drive) bay, two gigabit Ethernet ports, VGA and DVI-D video outputs, and digital I/O, the company says.

        Lanner's LEC-7020 industrial PC, introduced just last month, employed the typical Atom N270 processor, but distinguished itself by offering both a 3G cellular modem and GPS receiver. The new LEC-7100 (above), billed as Lanner's "flagship IPC," now goes one step further, retaining these connectivity options but stepping up to the dual-core Atom D510 processor.

        Like many other embedded devices employing Intel's "Pineview" Atoms, the LEC-7100 bypasses the NM10 I/O controller meant for netbooks, instead using the ICH8M (82801HM), a block diagram of which may be found here. Maximum memory is 2GB of DDR2 RAM via a single SODIMM slot, says Lanner.

        According to Lanner, the LEC-7100 has a Mini PCI Express slot that's intended to be used with an optional 3G/GPS module. The company doesn't provide any information about the underlying chipsets or available operating frequencies, but mention of a SIM slot suggests that, like the LEC-7020, the device is intended for GSM networks.

        Lanner says the "WiFi-ready" LEC-7100 offers a variety of wired connections. The front of the device, pictured below, includes a VGA output, a DVI-D output, stereo audio output via two RCA jacks, and two gigabit Ethernet ports. The rear, meanwhile, is said to offer a serial port, digital I/O (four in, four out, via a DB9 connector), four USB 2.0 ports, and an input for 12VDC power.

        According to Lanner, the LEC-7100 can support a 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive internally. Meanwhile, Type I/II CompactFlash storage is also included. We'd guess that, as with the LEC-7020, access requires opening the bottom of the device.

        Operating over temperatures from 14 to 131 deg. F (-10 to 55 deg. C), the computer has a Winbond W83627 temperature sensor and watchdog timer, Lanner says. The device supports Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Embedded, and Linux 2.4.16 and above, the company adds.
