Thin client specialist Devon IT has introduced its first mobile thin client, a notebook computer running Windows XP Embedded. The Safebook, priced under $800, offers a high level of security by virtue of applications and data being stored on a server, instead of on the device, according to the company.

Devon claims the Safebook is immune to standard computer viruses and spyware because there's no disk on which to store malicious software. This also means sensitive data can't be lost or stolen. Remote wired or wireless access to server-based applications and data is secured through Citrix ICA or Microsoft RDP protocols.

Key features and specifications of the Safebook, as listed by Devon, include:
        • Processor -- Via C7 M clocked at 1.5 GHz
        • Memory -- up to 1 GB DDR RAM; 512 MB flash
        • Display -- 12.1-inch XVGA
        • I/O ports:
          • 10/100 Ethernet, RJ45, wake on LAN
          • 3 USB 2.0
          • Audio -- line out and mic in jacks
          • 15-pin connector for external VGA
        • Expansion -- PCMCIA Type II slot
        • Wireless -- mini-PCI 802.11b/g
        • Dimensions -- 11.1 x 9.7 x 1.1 inches (283 x 245 x 28 mm)
        • Weight -- 4 lbs with 5-cell battery
The Safebook is available now at "special introductory pricing" starting at $799, Devon says. Further details are available on request.
