        Low-power WiFi chip gains Windows Mobile SDIO driver

        Bsquare has developed a Windows Mobile SDIO client driver for NXP Semiconductor's low-power 802.11g WiFi controller. The BGW211 WiFi controller implements complete 802.11g functionality optimized for real-time audio and video content delivery smartphones, portable media players (PMPs), and other handheld devices, according to NXP.




        The Bsquare-supplied driver is based on the company's SDIO Hx stack, and supports throughput rates of over 10 Mbps. Bsquare claims that the "high performance" stack enables Windows Mobile devices to download songs and other multimedia files from the Internet, via a wireless access point, in a sixth the time required by other Windows Mobile WiFi stacks.

        NXP's WiFi controller is contained in a 10 x 15 x 1.3 mm package. The "SiP" (system-in-package) device integrates a 90nm CMOS 802.11g baseband/MAC along with a silicon-germanium BiCMOS radio transceiver. Additionally, a built-in ARM7 processor offloads WLAN-related tasks from the host processor.

        NXP says it hopes to accelerate the adoption of its low-power WLAN products in the Windows Mobile space by using the new SDIO WiFi driver to help OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) quickly develop and deploy new products.

        According to Paul Marino, NXP's VP of Business Line Connectivity, the combination of Bsquare's SDIO client driver and NXP's "leading low-power WLAN solutions" results in "best-in-class WLAN performance" on client devices running Windows Mobile. "Our solution enables our customers to deliver rich and satisfying real-time wireless multimedia experiences on mobile and portable consumer devices, like SmartPhones and Portable Media Players, without sacrificing battery life," he added.

        NXP plans to demonstrate the BGW211 running the Bsquare SDIO Hx Windows Mobile client driver at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona next week.
