Advantech has introduced "complete" family of hardware modules and control software targeting "machine automation" applications. The AMAX system comprises a "master" module based on a Pentium III processor running Windows CE, along with various "slave" modules for motion control and digital input/output...

The master module contains a control computer consisting of a Pentium III processor, up to 256MB DDR DRAM memory, and 128KB of battery backup RAM. The master module also provides a 10/100Base-T Ethernet LAN port, dual USB ports, and three serial ports (two RS-232 and one RS-422/485) to handle communications and interfacing requirements. Additionally, a built-in "AMONet" port enables the master module to interface with one or more slave modules that can be used to control up to 2048 digital I/O points and 64 axes of motion.

        AMAX system architecture

The AMAX system features embedded Windows CE support for real-time application requirements, and it also includes "KW Multiprog" and PLCopen motion control software function blocks for programming of control networks with standard languages, Advantech said. Both KW Multiprog and PLCopen are focused on IEC 61331, the global standard for industrial control programming.

Specialized automation-oriented software embedded in the master module "makes it easy for engineers to create and deploy reliable and deterministic applications through one complete programmable automation controller in multiple domain applications," says Mars Huang, product manager at Advantech.

All modules are currently available. Pricing was not disclosed.
