A whitepaper by Tony Walters of Certicom asserts that Digital Rights Management (DRM) is of critical importance for manufacturers of digital playback devices. Yet, devices that access protected content can't be considered secure unless they are built on a "trusted platform" that provides security from the boot process upward, according to Walters.

The paper begins by reviewing the model developed by the Trusted Computing Group for how such trusted devices should function. Walters then goes on to describe how a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) can implement this functionality in an embedded device with a minimum of board real estate and power consumption.
