Sylvan Ascent Inc. unveiled PocketTerra, a set of mapping and GPS components for field data collection via the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework. The company says its software enables users to easily locate features in the field using detailed topographic maps, aerial photographs, and GPS at no cost.
Once found, data can be entered about the feature using normal Windows Forms. Microsoft SQL Server CE enables data to automatically synchronize to a centralized SQL Server database whenever the device is connected to the Internet. Free maps are provided by the TerraServer Web service.
"Microsoft is excited to see Sylvan support Windows Mobile software development with Visual Studio .NET 2003," commented Jonathan Wells, product manager for the Developer and Platform Evangelism Division at Microsoft Corp. "Sylvans PocketTerra takes advantage of many key features offered by the .NET Compact Framework on Windows Mobile devices, most importantly the ability to access rich data regardless of the network connection state"
