Owners of camera-equipped Windows Mobile devices can take photos, then send them over the air to their home media servers, thanks to software announced today by Axentra Corporation. Users can also play audio and video files remotely on phones or network-enabled PDAs, according to the company.

The mobile access capability is a new feature in the HipServ software supplied by Axentra to LaCie for its Ethernet disk mini, a network storage device that comes in 320GB or 500GB capacities and supports Windows, Macintosh, or Linux clients. The Ethernet Disk mini, pictured above, is touted as the first commercial device to combine remote access through the Internet, stream multimedia files through DLNA-compatible UPnP media players, and act as an iTunes music server.

As well as being uploadable from a Windows Mobile phone, stored file can be viewed "simply and securely via any Internet browser." Users can grant customizable access to friends and family through email invitations, Axentra says. Locally, photos can be shared and viewed on any UPnP TV or from any Microsoft Xbox 360 or Sony Playstation 3.

Axentra did not state whether uploading of files from Windows Mobile devices requires a dedicated client or is accomplished using a Web browser. However, the capability, which will also be supported on Blackberry devices and Apple iPhones, makes its debut as a free HipServ upgrade at the end of this month, according to the company.

The Ethernet Disk mini, currently available, costs approximately $170 in a 320GB configuration or $200 in a 500GB configuration.
