Socket Mobile introduced a handheld computer for healthcare providers, designed to protect against the spread of microorganisms. Featuring a case made of antimicrobial materials, the SoMo 650Rx (left) runs Windows Mobile 6.1, has a 3.5-inch touchscreen display, and offers both 802.11b/g and Bluetooth, the company says.

According to Socket Mobile, its new SoMo 650Rx has a case made of special antimicrobial material, designed to protect against the spread of MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus). Lab test results show that the casing brings about a more than 99 percent reduction in staph bacteria on the device over a 24-hour period, the company claims. Additionally, when the computer is cleaned with Sani-Cloth wipes, its antimicrobial properties are doubled, the company adds.

To go with the SoMo 650Rx, Socket Mobile is offering either a scanner that fits into the device's CompactFlash slot, plus a cordless hand scanner that can connect to the device via Bluetooth. Both use the same antimicrobial material for their casings, and both provide for 1D and 2D barcode scanning, the company says.

Apart from the color and material of its casing, the SoMo 650Rx is essentially similar to the previously released SoMo 650 (right), which is also offered as the radioless SoMO 650-HS. However, where these earlier devices were launched with Windows Mobile 5.0, the SoMo 650Rx comes with Windows Mobile 6.1, according to Socket Mobile.

The SoMo 650Rx has a 624MHz Marvell PXA270 processor clocked at 624MHz, 128MB of RAM, and 256MB of flash storage. It has a 3.5-inch touchscreen display with 320 x 240 resolution, and sports both CompactFlash and SDIO expansion slots. The 650Rx includes both 802.11b/g wireless networking and Bluetooth, and has a built-in microphone and speaker, allowing it to be used for VoIP applications, says Socket Mobile.

As healthcare providers are recognizing the need for increased control and prevention, we felt strongly that mobile devices should follow suit."
