Gigabeat.
After
MobileWhack published a photo of a new Toshiba media-player it discovered in an FCC filing, and suggested that the device might be the anxiously-awaited Zune,
Engadget published its own coverage loaded with additional FCC photos of the device, designated "Toshiba 1089," and with the assertion that the device is, in fact, Microsoft's Zune.
Interestingly, the
Engadget article adds the observation that Microsoft, by outsourcing Zune production, will save the trouble of setting up its own production lines, and will avoid "stepping on at least one PlaysForSure licensee's toes."
Adding fuel to this fire,
CrunchGear reports that "a source close to the Zune project has just confirmed that the Microsoft Zune is actually a
Toshiba Gigabeat with MS specific features."
Oh well, it appears that Microsoft's hot new media player won't be running an embedded Microsoft OS after all -- that is, assuming the rumors are accurate that Zune will be a modified Toshiba Gigabeat.
