Microsoft has released financial results for its third fiscal quarter, which ended March 31. Revenue from the Mobile and Embedded Devices (MED) segment was reportedly $80 million, down slightly from last quarter's record $85 million, but up 31 percent over the corresponding period last year.

MED's operating loss increased to $8 million from last quarter's $4 million, but was substantially less than the $36 million loss in the prior year's third fiscal quarter.

The company as a whole reported revenue of $9.62 billion, up 5 percent over the results in the same period last year. Company-wide operating income for the third quarter was $3.33 billion, compared to $1.28 billion in the prior year.

For the first nine months of the current fiscal year, MED revenue increased from $177 million last year to $240 million, an increase of 38 percent, while operating losses decreased dramatically, from $180 million to $32 million. Microsoft reports that sales of Windows Mobile licenses were more than double prior year levels, and that the Windows Mobile platform "continues to experience strong momentum with developers." The company claims over 380,000 active Windows Mobile developers, and over 18,000 Windows Mobile applications.

The Mobile and Embedded Devices segment currently accounts for less than 1 percent of the Microsoft's total revenue.
