Clendenin reports that
Zhang Ya-qin, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Mobile and Embedded Devices Division, "has been working closely with hardware makers in Asia," in particular Taiwanese ODM (original design manufacturer) High Tech Computer (HTC). Rebranded versions of HTC's Windows Mobile smartphones have been picked up by numerous mobile carriers worldwide, including
Verizon and
Cingular in the US, and
T-Mobile in Europe. (The device pictured at the top of this story is the
HTC Universal, which HTC calls the "world's first" 3G mobile phone based on Windows Mobile 5.0.)
Among the developments that "bode well for Microsoft," according to Clendenin, is the
release last month of Windows Mobile 5.0 with, support for
push email that is intended to compete with the email capabilities of Research In Motion's Blackberry device. Zhang claims that Microsoft has a "more direct approach for linking users with email" without proprietary servers and their attendant service fee, according to the
EETimes story.
