Microsoft is licensing several software packages from Global IP Sound (GIPS), a specialist in VoIP voice quality. The technologies "solve the inherent problems and general deficiencies introduced by wired or Wi-Fi networks -- such as delay, jitter, packet loss, clock-drift, acoustic and network echo," according to GIPS, as reported by ExtremeTech.com.

Utilized by the leading application developers, IP phone, gateway and chip manufacturers, GIPS SoundWare "enables VoIP implementations to withstand up to 30% packet loss and maintain telco-grade voice quality or better," GIPS says.

The specific SoundWare packages being licensed by Microsoft include VoiceEngine, Acoustic Echo Cancellation, and Auto Gain Control. In particular, GIPS AEC and AGC packages are designed to auto-adjust the volume of a voice call to optimize it for the participants.
