"Linux" and "free" are practically synonymous, but what about the cost of support? Developers visiting LinuxWorld in San Francisco next week won't have to worry about any hidden costs when Microsoft's Windows Embedded team lures them out of the convention center for free food and drink.

Windows Embedded executives Mike Hall and Dan Javnozon brazenly continue their tradition of hosting a get-together at Jillian's sports bar, across from San Francisco's Moscone center. Those who attend the so-called "Microsoft Connection Cantina" will be able to "mingle and discuss questions" about Microsoft's embedded products, including Windows XP Embedded, Windows Embedded for Point of Service, and Windows CE 6.

Also present will be some independent consultants who have gained "MVP" status as top experts in using Microsoft's embedded products.

Hall and Javnozon not only survived last year's event but introduced many Linux hackers to Windows Embedded. A Microsoft spokesperson estimated 2006 attendance at between 100 and 150.

The "Microsoft Connection Cantina" will take place from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, August 8. Jillian's is located at 101 4th Street, on the corner of Mission and 4th.
