Regarding Windows CE 6.0, Microsoft says its "Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Monthly Update (November 2008)" targets developers creating new operating system images using the company's Visual Studio and Platform Builder tools. The update includes fixes -- all apparently noncritical -- to Bluetooth, DirectX, Internet Explorer, Network projector, and other CE components, according to the company.
The fixes in the November 2008 Windows CE 6.0 update are listed by Microsoft on its website in the following order, including references to entries in the company's online Knowledge Base:
- KB959618 -- This update to Windows CE's Bluetooth stack addresses an issue that may occur if a request comes from a device with a 255-character name
- KB957901 -- This update fixes a problem wherein Windows Server 2008 may not respond to DHCP v. 6 packets sent by a Windows CE 6.0 device
- KB959374 -- This DirectX fix addresses the issue of incorrect validation of an overlay's constant alpha value
- KB959480 [the link provided by Microsoft does not appear to lead to an active Knowledge Base page, but might do so in future] -- This DirectX update addresses an issue with choppy audio and video when streaming content over MMS or HTTP with a data rate of 4Mbps or higher
- KB958070 -- This update to Internet Explorer addresses "a number of issues"
- KB959247 -- This update stops the erroneous display of certain error messages after the "Enable Ship Build" check box is selected
- KB959877 [the link provided by Microsoft does not yet appear to lead to an active Knowledge Base page] -- This update prevents a deadlock that can occur with MSXML when two threads with different priority share the lock
- KB959416 [the link provided by Microsoft does not yet appear to lead to an active Knowledge Base page] -- This update adds an ioctl function to Network Projector to set/get a new "suspended" status
- KB958805 [the link provided by Microsoft does not yet appear to lead to an active Knowledge Base page] -- This update addresses an issue with the Heaplist command in the CEDebugX extension returning an error
- KB959879 -- This update prevents Platform Builder 6.0 from trying to read uncommitted memory pages, by making sure the valid bit is set on the page table entry
According to Microsoft, the above fixes are bundled in a cumulative update that comes in different versions for ARM, MIPS, SH4, and x86 processors. The package will install all updates directly to the build environment specified by the original Platform Builder installation, the company adds.
The Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Monthly Update (November 2008) requires prior installation of
Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2. Other software needed to create a supported Windows Embedded CE 6.0 development environment includes Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio 2005 SP1, Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Update for Vista (if applicable), Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Platform Builder, Windows Embedded CE 6.0 SP1, and the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Cumulative Product Update Rollup 12/31/2007, according to Microsoft.
Windows Embedded Standard updatesIn related news, Microsoft said it is taking a holiday break from providing "optional updates" for
Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and
Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 3 for December. However, security updates for these x86-specific embedded operating systems are in progress, according to the company, and should be released by the end of the month or in early January.
