Of the seven updates in Microsoft's "Security Updates for July," four apply to Windows XP and XP SP1. Users of Windows XP Embedded who use any of the affected components should also apply the update patches.
Two of the seven updates are deemed critical. One addresses an unchecked buffer overrun in XP's Task Scheduler. The other relates to vulnerabilities in XP's HTML Help and showhelp. In both cases, according to Microsoft, "If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker ... could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts that have full privileges."
