The news came during the Sept. 14 press conference that announced the Zune multimedia player (pictured at left), Reuters news service reports.
"A Zune phone is definitely part of the future of this brand," Reuters quotes Chris Stephenson, Microsoft's general manager of global marketing for Zune, as telling reporters at the news conference. Stephenson gave no further details, according to Reuters.
So, what might a Zune phone look like? Would it run
Windows Mobile? Or, would it following in the footsteps of the Zune and stick with a more stripped-down OS approach, perhaps along the lines of Intrinsyc's
Windows CE-based feature-phone platform? Given its likely mass market target, the Zune phone will need to keep costs -- and hence system resources -- to an absolute minimum. Time will tell.
Reuters also noted that movie downloads will not be part of the initial Zune multimedia player release scheduled for the upcoming holiday season.
