revenue for the segment dropped by $1 million. Operating loss for the segment decreased from $34 million one year ago to $20 million this year, and was less than half that of the prior quarter.
For the company as a whole, first quarter revenue was $9.19 billion this year, up from $8.22 billion last year, an increase of 12 percent. Net income was reported as $2.9 billion. Diluted earnings per share exceeded Microsoft's guidance by $0.02 and were $0.27 including stock-based compensation expense.
"We've had a strong beginning to what we expect will be a very good year with continued growth in both our commercial and consumer businesses," said John Connors, chief financial officer at Microsoft.
