Microsoft has updated its .NET class library that implements the retail industry's Unified Point of Service (UnifiedPOS) standards for the .NET platform. In addition to updating several existing functions, POS for .NET v1.11 adds device classes for biometrics, electronic journal, bill acceptor, bill dispenser, coin acceptor, and image scanner peripherals, according to the company.

POS for .NET provides .NET applications with a simple and consistent interface for communicating with point-of-service (POS) peripheral devices, according to Microsoft. POS for .NET version 1.11 supports the latest UnifiedPOS release, version 1.11. In particular, the new version updates the ClearInput, SmartCard, and Printer base classes, and adds device classes for new POS-oriented peripherals, including biometrics, electronic journal, bill acceptor, bill dispenser, coin acceptor, and image scanner, according to a post on Microsoft's WEPOS team blog.

POS for .NET is supported on Windows XP Pro, Windows Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS), Vista Business, and Vista Enterprise. It requires the .NET Framework version 2.0 runtime.

According to WEPOS program manager Shayna Begun, Microsoft is "seeing significant industry support from our Retail OEM, IHV, and ISV partners." To date more than 60 partners have developed products for either WEPOS or POS for .NET.
