Fiat Auto and Microsoft's Automotive Business Unit have announced a long-term strategic partnership to develop innovative telematics solutions. The deal combines Fiat Auto's experience and research in telematics services with Microsoft's expertise in providing standard platforms, services and applications, according to the announcement.

The companies say the goal of the partnership is to design telematics systems that enable drivers to communicate effectively with the outside world. These systems are to be flexible, easy to access, and easy to use, and will feature high-quality voice activation. Users will be able to integrate their own devices such as cell phones and Pocket PCs with the vehicle's systems.

The joint system will be based on standard hardware and will operate with Microsoft Windows Automotive software, according to the partners. This will enable Fiat Auto to implement a software design that can be customized and upgraded according to customer preference. Both companies plan to develop a system that interoperates with Controller Area Networks (CANs) for diagnostic data.
