This week at TechEd 2005, Micosoft unveiled its strategy to develop a scalable radio frequency identification (RFID) technology infrastructure, intended to enable customers and partners to "easily integrate business processes using RFID data." Vice President of Server Applications Paul Flessner demonstrated an early version of the technology in a keynote.

According to a statement issued by Microsoft, adoption of RFID is hindered by many factors, including "complexity of device management, lack of standards, limited solutions to cleanse volumes of data, and costly integration with existing business applications." The company said it plans to address these "pain points" with its RFID infrastructure, thereby stimulating faster RFID adoption.

The new infrastructure will include an "advanced device management layer" intended to enable users to configure and manage devices in a "simple plug-and-play manner," Microsoft's statement continued. The "scalable and extensible" RFID infrastructure will enable users to read data through both standards-based and nonstandards-based sensors "regardless of formats, thereby reducing customers' dependency on a specific technology [and thus] protecting their RFID investments over the long term."

The new RFID infrastructure will be implemented on the .NET Framework, using Visual Studio .NET as the design environment, and will make use of "the latest Extensible Markup Language (XML) Web services to connect data and processes," Microsoft said. Hence, "IT professionals will be able to rapidly deploy business processes, perform real-time monitoring and remotely configure devices."
