For those wanting to get an immediate glimpse of some of the technical aspects of the
.NET MF, the authors of
Embedded Programming with the Microsoft .NET Micro Framework have have posted sample chapters online for review and comment. The new book will serve as the essential guide for developing applications for the next generation of embedded devices, according to Microsoft.
Currently available on the book's
website are an overview, table of contents, and chapters 1 through 3. Authors Donald Thompson and Rob Miles caution that the preview chapters are in a rather "funky" format, as they're based on templates used for final layout.
"Why not put on a nice Earth Wind and Fire album and take a look?," suggests Miles. "And please add some comments if you find something you like/loathe."
The book is scheduled for release in late April, according to Microsoft.
MSDN .NET MF areaThe new area of MSDN devoted to the .NET MF,
located here, aims to provide a centralized location for .NET MF information and resources. Microsoft says an e-newsletter is currently available for subscription, and the site will soon include a newsgroup.
What's the .NET MF?According to Microsoft, the .NET MF is a natural extension of its embedded software product line, bringing the efficiency and reliability of a managed code environment to very small devices with tight constraints on cost, memory, processing resources, and/or power consumption. Additionally, .NET MF's integration with Visual Studio will optimize software development efficiency, by providing PC emulation capabilities and on-device debugging within the Visual Studio IDE. User interface development is supported with Windows Presentation Foundation.
First announced in May, the .NET MF grew out of the
Smart Personal Objects Technology (SPOT) initiative. Earlier versions have been variously dubbed
.NET Embedded and
TinyCLR.
