TapRoot Systems has released a Windows Mobile 6 version of its embedded WLAN middleware for dual-mode (WLAN/WAN) smartphones. The software components target device providers that need to support the latest features required by next-generation wireless carrier networks, while meeting carrier certification requirements, according to the company.

TapRoot says it has developed the necessary security and roaming components needed to support and manage the discovery, authentication, and encryption for WLAN networks on a Windows Mobile handset. The "integration-ready" components and services comprise WLAN "security supplicants," mobility management supporting IMS (IP multimedia subsystem) and UMA (unlicensed mobile access) messaging methods, power management, and device drivers.

The company says its Windows Mobile 6 Security Supplicant component supports a wide variety of carrier security methods, including those required for WPA/WPA2 personal and enterprise certification. Additionally, the Mobility Management and Power Management components, are said to satisfy carrier specific requirements for accessing next generation voice, video, and data services on the "leading" chipsets.

Director of product management Justin Helmig stated, "TapRoot's embedded WLAN software solutions for Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 handsets enable the leading handset OEMs and ODMs to meet the most advanced carrier requirements on the leading silicon platforms."

In addition to Windows Mobile, TapRoot says its WLAN software components also support Linux and Symbian mobile platforms.
