[Updated Feb. 21, 2005] -- The open-source Mozilla web browser, already familiar to many Windows desktop PC users, is being trimmed down to fit in mobile and embedded devices, including ones running Windows CE.

The Minimo ("Mini Mozilla") project is focused on footprint reduction, to fit Mozilla within 32-64MB of memory, according to the project's website.

While much of the work is focused on Linux-based devices, Doug Turner, one of the Minimo project leaders, recently announced that he is working on a port to Windows CE. Turner also issued a general call to Windows CE developers to help out in this effort.

Turner says he's running Minimo on an HP iPAQ 6315. The current build uses the Pocket PC 2003 SDK. "The heavy lifting is mostly done with respect to porting," according to Turner, but a lot of work still needs to be done in terms of Windows integration.

Minimo is based on the 1.7a Mozilla codebase and the current Windows CE build uses the Pocket PC 2003 SDK. More information can be found at the Minimo project website and the corresponding Netscape newsgroup. To try it out, download the precompiled Minimo zip build. Turner cautions that this is "basically the second build that... actually rendered a page successfully." The source code is available here.
