        Mobile app development tool gets upgraded, wins award

        AppForge has announced the latest release of its multi-platform mobile and wireless application development tool. New features in Crossfire 5.6 include GPS support, controls specific to Socket In Hand scanners, and improvements that simplify application deployment and activation, according to the company.




        AppForge says that Crossfire's GPS support includes cell-ID access that enables the development of location- based service applications. User interface options are expanded with a new treeview control that supports the display of -- and interaction with -- hierarchical data sets. The Client Installation Tool, also introduced in this release, simplifies application deployment and activation, according to the company.

        In related news, the previous version, Crossfire 5.5, won Software Development Magazine's Jolt Productivity award for the second year in a row. Crossfire won the award in the mobile development tools category along with Macromedia's Flash Lite 1.1 and Nokia's Codewarrior for Symbian 3.0 Professional. The Jolt Product Excellence and Productivity Awards are presented annually to products, books, and websites that have "jolted" the industry by helping to create faster, easier and more efficient software, according to the magazine. This year marks the 15th annual awards presentation.
