        Mobile application development tool revs up

        MobileDataforce this week announced the release of a major update to its rapid application development toolsuite for mobile applications running on industrial-strength handheld computers.


        PointSync Mobility Platform Version 4.0 includes over 150 new features and enhancements, including a new visual debugger, according to the company.

        PointSync Mobility Platform is described as a toolsuite for rapidly designing, developing, and deploying "business-critical applications" on mobile devices. The platform is said to provide database-centric mobile applications with bi-directional synchronization, connectivity, security, and enterprise database integration all within the context of a single product suite. The suite comprises four main components: PointSync Developer, PointSync Manager, PointSync Server, and PointSync Mobile.

        Key new enhancements in version PointSync Mobility Platform 4.0, as listed by the company, include:
        • New Visual Debugger to quickly debug mobile applications during development
        • New Data Mapping Wizard speeds up mobile application integration with enterprise databases
        • New SQL Builder speeds up SQL statement development
        • Enhanced library of over 220 pre-built functions for mobile application development
        • Enhanced graphical user interface tools to improve the user's mobile application experience
        • Expanded support for multiple PointSync applications and databases in a hosted environment
        • Enhanced server back-up and restore functions

        The product targets rugged handheld computers such as Symbol's 8000 and 9000 series devices (see listings), and Intermec's 700 series (see listings). Minimum requirements for the supported mobile device include 16MB RAM and a Windows Mobile 2003 or 2003 SE software platform, according to MobileDataforce.

        Version 4.0 of PointSync Mobility Platform appears to be immediately available. Pricing was not disclosed.
