Access has released a free technical preview of version 3.4 of its NetFront web browser for Pocket PCs. The company expects the preview to provide "extensive feedback" on significant new features, such as page-zooming and thumbnail-based bookmarks, prior the update's final release by mid-year.

According to Access, NetFront v3.4 aims to provide high performance in resource-constrained environments such as those with limited memory or CPU capabilities, and is a good match for the requirements of mobile phones and other consumer electronics.

The technical preview version includes a new "Page Pilot" feature that lets users quickly zoom in on a portion of a Web page, according to Access. Another key feature is "Visual Bookmark," which lets users select a bookmark via a thumbnail image. Version 3.4 is also faster, thanks to "optimized communications processing" and a redesigned module structure, the company says.

Access announced version 3.4 almost a year ago, describing it as a "versatile service platform, on which multiple applications can seemlessly combine online and offline content." Presumably, this newly announced "technical preview" will form the basis for a future upgrade to the released version 3.4.

Both English and Japanese versions of the technical preview are available for free download, here: English version; Japanese version.

Although perhaps best known for its OS-agnostic NetFront browser, Access acquired PalmSource in 2005, and is currently in the final stages of developing a Linux-based platform for mobile phones.
