DiVitas describes MMC as a mobile-network-, WLAN-, handset-, carrier-, and PBX-agnostic platform that provides seamless, automated, and uninterrupted roaming among disparate WiFi and cellular networks. The result, the company claims, is a "total mobile-communications experience" that remains under the complete control of the enterprise.
The MMC platform consists of two parts -- a server component, and a client component. the Mobile Convergence Appliance (MCA) is installed at the customer's premises and works with a PBX system to support WiFi and cellular connections. The Mobile Convergence Client (MCC), meanwhile, is installed on Windows Mobile or Symbian handsets and communicates with the MCA; it provides an integrated multi-mode communications interface for applications such as voice, video, SMS, IM, voice-mail, and presence.
In a statement, DiVitas CEO Vivek Khuller said, "Through this integration with Microsoft, DiVitas is directly extending the benefits of Office Live Communications Server 2005 and Office Communications Server 2007 beyond the desktop. End users will be able to place and receive calls and/or messages, whether they are in range of a cellular network or WiFi. They are no longer limited to cellular-only environments or a desktop connection."
