FWD Communications has launched an IP communications service that combines VoIP calling with instant messaging (IM), including conferencing, and implements "advanced" voice and IM capabilities such as presence detection. Although the pulver.Communicator software is initially limited to Windows XP and 2000, a mobile version that supports Windows Mobile Pocket PC Edition is in alpha...

test, and beta testers are being solicited.

According to FWD, users of pulver.Communicator can send instant messages, make voice calls, create conference calls, and establish cross party chat sessions over the four most popular IM networks -- AOL, Yahoo!, MSN, and ICQ. Users can make free worldwide VoIP voice calls over the company's "FWD Network" service to other pulver.Communicator users, as well as to subscribers of over 60 other VoIP service providers. Users can also talk to IM buddies that do not have VoIP capabilities through "Call-Me links" that require no special software, FWD says.

The conferencing function enables users to create virtual conference rooms that simultaneously support both voice and IM, according to FWD. Here too, conference participants be using any of the four most popular IM networks; but they can also dial-in over the PSTN (standard telephone) network.

pulver.Communicator includes a "shared buddy list" feature that allows users to view and share their buddy lists with other subscribers. The feature can be disabled, if desired.

FWD Communications COO Jim Toga says the company plans to add more features, such as video, on a continuing basis.

pulver.Communicator is available for free download here. Information regarding beta test of pulver.Communicator Mobile for Pocket PC is available here.
