Syware is beta-testing a version of its mobile database development tool that supports Windows Mobile "smartphones" that lack touchscreens. Using this update to Visual CE, developers will be able to create a single application that runs on all Windows Mobile devices with "only minor modifications," the company says.

According to Syware, Visual CE allows mobile users to rapidly create feature-rich database applications -- without programming -- that can be deployed on any Windows Mobile or Windows CE device (currently limited to those with touchscreens, in the production release of Visual CE). The tool is said to offer an intuitive, drag-and-drop interface that makes it easy to design, maintain, and run flexible forms and databases.

The latest production release, Visual CE 10, incorporates a macro editor that guides non-programmers through the process of creating well-structured, well-documented macros, according to the company. It also supports remote device control features, such as allowing an administrator to configure devices from a central site, and purging applications and data from a lost or stolen device.

The beta release of Visual CE with non-touchscreen "smartphone" support is available free to "most" registered users of Visual CE 10.x, according to Syware. Customers are advised to email the company to request a copy. The final release is expected in "about sixty days."
