        Mobile-optimized fonts available for licensing

Font specialist Ascender Corp. announced a sublicensing program whereby it will make its font software available for re-distribution with components targeting mobile device and digital television applications.

The program will allow middleware, user interface, browser, and silicon vendors to offer high quality font support to their OEM customers, the company said.

In addition to its own original designs, Ascender's font library includes fonts licensed from Microsoft and from Bigelow & Holmes, according to the company. Among these are fonts that have been specifically designed for user interfaces in mobile devices, the EIA-708-B closed caption font set for digital televisions and set-top boxes, Teletext fonts that meet the European Closed Caption specifications, Compact Asian fonts, and fonts compatible with Multimedia Home Platform (MHP), Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), and Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) specifications.

The company claims its sublicensing program is unique because commercial quality fonts are typically only licensed directly to the ultimate OEM, and are not available for re-distribution by third parties.

Additionally, Ascender says its engineers can assist with font implementation, including porting font rendering engines such as the Open Source FreeType engine. FreeType is a flexible, compact font that supports all the popular font formats including bitmap, Type 1, TrueType and OpenType. It has been successfully deployed in a wide variety of commercial products including mobile phones, PDAs and game systems, according to the company.

"Fonts are the perfect complement to the products offered by developers serving the mobile and digital television OEMs," said Steve Kuhlman, Ascender's Vice President. "This program enables developers to broaden their product offering with no virtually no development or support investment while extending the reach for Ascender products in these markets."
