Windows handheld and kiosk target retail operations

Motorola has announced two Windows CE-based devices with integral barcode scanning capabilities. The Symbol MT2000 is a handheld computer that may also be tethered to laptops or POS (point of sale) systems, while the Symbol MK4000 is a self-service kiosk that lets customers check pricing or gift card balances, the company says.

Motorola's MT2000 (pictured at right) is described as an "entry-level value priced mobile terminal," and is available with 1D and/or 2D barcode scanning capabilities, according to the company. The device can also be equipped with a deactivator for Checkpoint EAS theft-deterrent tags; therefore, retail associates can scan the price of an item and deactivate its tag with a single press of the trigger, without relying on additional devices, the company says.

According to Motorola, the MT2000 may be employed as a scanner by any POS system or laptop, simply by tethering the device via RS232 or USB to an external system. Alternatively, the MT2000 may also be used as a stand-alone computer. The device runs Windows CE 5.0 -- possibly in character mode only, and without web browsing capabilities -- on a Marvell PXA270 processor clocked at 312MHz, and has 64MB of RAM and 64MB of flash storage, Motorola says.

The MT2000 incorporates a QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) color display, apparently without touchscreen capability, a 21-key alphanumeric keyboard, a four-way navigation button, and two programmable function keys, says Motorola. The device also includes a USB 2.0 host port, an RS232 port, and Bluetooth, while 802.11a/b/g is an available option.

Motorola claims that, just as on its higher-end handheld computers, the MT2000 can survive a six-foot drop, and in fact suffers no degradation in performance when subjected to 500 consecutive three-foot drops via a rotating drum. The device also carriers a IP54 rating for resistance to dust and liquids, the company says.

Operable from -4 to 122 deg. F (-20 to 50 deg. C), the MT2000 has a 2400mAh lithium-ion battery, though we didn't see a claim as to how long this will hold out. A wide range of accessory cradles is available, providing facilities such as Ethernet and charging of one to four different batteries, Motorola adds.

Features and specifications listed by Motorola for the MT2000 include the following:

        • Processor -- Marvell PXA270 clocked at 312MHz

        The MK4000 kiosk

Motorola's new MK4000 is a price-checking kiosk, similar to the KDT900 recently introduced by AML. Intended to be placed on a retail sales floor, the unit allows customers to check pricing, verify gift card balances, order products from a store website, or print out personalized coupons without assistance, the company says.

Compatible with an optional MSR (magnetic stripe reader), the MK4000 (above) includes "omnidirectional" 1D or 1D/2D barcode scanning capabilities. The kiosk also has three mini-USB 1.1 ports, allowing connection of a keyboard, printer, or other peripherals, Motorola says.

According to Motorola, the MK4000 has a 12.1-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, plus a microphone and stereo speakers. Running an undisclosed version of Windows CE on a 624MHz Marvell processor, the kiosk also includes Internet Explorer 6.0, 128MB of RAM, 64MB of flash storage, and a microSD slot, the company says.

In addition to the USB ports already mentioned, the MK4000 has an Ethernet port. Wireless networking (802.11a/b/g) is standard too, says Motorola.
