Motorola rumored to drop Windows Mobile smartphone

DigiTimes of Taiwan is reporting that Motorola has cancelled its MPx230 smartphone based on Windows Mobile. The device was to be manufactured by Chi Mei Communication Systems (CMCS) of Taiwan, according to the report.

The MPx230 reportedly included Wi-Fi and VoIP support, and the news site speculates that Motorola may have canceled the order at least partly in response to a Chinese government ban on "unapproved" Wi-Fi devices. However, Motorola may also cancel orders with Taiwanese ODMs for a number of phones that do not support Wi-Fi, the DigiTimes story says, including the MPx200, MPx220, and MPx.

A posting at Slashphone suggests that Motorola may be planning to produce the MPx series smartphones in its own facilities. Meanwhile, a Motorola official in Asia said in January that Motorola will ship eight to 10 new phone models based on Linux in 2005.

The brief DigiTimes story can be found here.
