Motorola
announced plans in October 2003 to jettison its SPS semiconductor unit, claiming it would represent the "world's #1 embedded processor company." SPS is responsible for such processors as the PowerPC, PowerQUICC, ARM-based DragonBall i.MX, and ColdFire processors.
Motorola says the naming process for Freescale Semiconductor involved extensive interviews and research conducted among the company's employees, customers and industry analysts worldwide.
"Freescale Semiconductor provides customers with a heritage built on 50 years of semiconductor experience," noted Scott Anderson, president and CEO of Freescale Semiconductor. "We're pleased to blend the expertise and stability of an established technology provider with the spirit and fresh vision of a new company. Accordingly, we've created a name that's intended to identify our team's dedication to agility, service and reliability."
The S-1 document, proposing Freescale Semiconductor's separation from Motorola, was amended today with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Further details are available
