STMicroelectronics has announced that its family of mobile multimedia application processors and associated board support package (BSP) have been certified by Microsoft as compatible with Windows CE 5.0. Certification will make the Nomadik processor family "more readily accepted" by customers and OEMs, ST says.

According to ST, the Nomadik processors feature ultra-low power consumption, high performance, low cost, easy application development, and scalability. The family includes the original STn8800 and three recent additions: the STn8810, STn8811, and STn8812. All are based on an ARM926EJ CPU core together with programmable "smart accelerators" that operate independently and concurrently to handle key video and audio coding functions, including pre/post-processing.

Relative to the STn8800, the STn8811 adds improved video and audio performance, advanced power management features, and a "comprehensive security framework to protect sensitive data," according to ST. To that set of features, the STn8811 and STn8812 add larger SDRAM and NAND flash memory capacities, utilizing an "advanced chip-stacking" package technology, the company says.

ST's Windows CE based BSP includes a bootloader, configuration files, and device drivers supporting the use of a Nomadik processor on a standard development board.
