Multimedia stack targets Windows Mobile devices

[Updated 3:30 PM] -- Tao Group says it is shipping a mobile phone version of its multimedia application stack for embedded devices. "Intent Mobile" supports Windows Mobile and other mobile and embedded OSes, and provides a Java virtual machine (JVM), audio and 3D graphics middleware, and an Internet-oriented application stack.

The Tao Group's Intent application stack includes a built-in multi-tasking, real-time operating system called "Intent." However, Intent can serve as a runtime kernel "hosted" under another OS, the company says.

Host OSes supported by Intent include Windows CE, Linux, Symbian, and others. Additionally, the software is easily portable across hardware architectures, the company claims, allowing it to support diverse product platforms within an organization.

Another touted feature of Intent Mobile is customizability, through an Application Management System (AMS) that centrally stores user preferences for use by all Intent applications. Intent's AMS also boasts a user interface for downloading and installing new components, multimedia codecs, and Java libraries, the company says.

Besides the AMS, a JVM, "audio engine," and 3D graphics middleware, Intent Mobile includes an HTML browser, image viewer, PIM (personal information manager) suite, and an integrated messaging client supporting SMS, MMS, IM, and email.

CEO Ray Burgess stated, "Intent's strengths of high-power, small size, and binary portability have always been ideally suited to the mobile environment. With intent Mobile we have simplified the proposition, providing manufacturers with a one-stop shop."

Teleca Sweden West's VP of mobile devices, Jorgen Jost auf der Stroth, stated, "The Intent Mobile platform is ideal for creating rich user environments for the next generation of handsets."

Availability

Tao Group says Intent Mobile is available now. An Intent SDK (software development kit) based on Freescale's CodeWarrior IDE may also be available.

Tao will demonstrate Intent and Intent Mobile at the 3GSM World Congress next week in Barcelona.
