Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo announced Monday that it plans to add Windows Mobile 3G handsets to its phone lineup during the second half of this year. The move will add a third OS option to DoCoMo's mobile phone product family, alongside Symbian and Linux.

DoCoMo said it will source the devices from Taiwanese ODM (original design manufacturer) HTC, which will supply it with devices running Windows Mobile 5.0 Japanese Edition that run on the DoCoMo FOMA 3G network. The dual-mode W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS handsets will be aimed primarily at corporate users, will offer voice, video, and packet communications compatible with wireless LANs, and will feature a QWERTY keyboard, the company added.

HTC manufactures many of the Windows Mobile smartphones and PDA phones sold throughout the world by numerous wireless carriers. The company has developed an extensive set of reference platforms, such as the Apache shown above.

DoCoMo did not indicate which HTC reference platforms would be used for its new 3G Windows Mobile 3G handsets.
