NTT taps Windows Media technologies for 3G handsets

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo says it is incorporating Microsoft's Windows Media technologies into its 3G FOMA handsets, beginning with the F902iS that will launch this summer. The F902iS will support both Windows Media Audio and Windows Media Digital Rights Management 10 for Portable Devices (WMDRM-PD), according to NTT.

NTT says that Windows Media technologies will allow its handsets to play music downloaded to a PC from online music services, and also support music content ripped from CDs in the "highly efficient" Windows Media Audio format. The company will also evaluate incorporating Windows Media Video into future handsets.

FOMA, which stands for Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access (yes, there's an M missing), is DoCoMo's brand name for 3G wireless services. FOMA was the first 3G mobile service based on W-CDMA when it debuted in 2001, and now has 24 million subscribers, according to NTT.

"Microsoft's Windows Media platform and the company's commitment toward enabling new digital rights management solutions for the wireless environment are helping to push the industry forward," said Takeshi Natsuno, DoCoMo's senior VP and managing director of Multimedia Services. "With support for Windows Media, users of our FOMA handsets will enjoy a broader range of services and more choices for entertainment."

NTT announced in January that it plans to add Windows Mobile 3G handsets to its phone lineup during the second half of this year. The move will add a third OS option to DoCoMo's mobile phone product family, alongside Symbian and Linux. Presumably, the F902iS is not one of the new Windows Mobile handsets.
