PNDs have capacitive screens, rendered 3D

Navigon has announced two high-end PNDs (personal navigation devices) that boast capacitive touchscreens, metal cases, voice command, and "Real City3D" graphics. The Windows CE-based 8410 and 8450 Live devices have five-inch displays, TMC (traffic message channel) receivers, and optional digital TV modules, the company says.

According to Navigon, the 8410 and 8450 have capacitive touchscreens made of glass, making them among the first Windows devices to be so equipped. The five-inch displays are wrapped up in fancy metal cases, the company adds.

An unusual feature found on both devices is "Real City3D" (above) via which "streets, buildingswith real fronts, road markings such as zebra [pedestrian] crossings and even traffic lights are all displayed three-dimensionally on the screen," according to Navigon. Of course, the rendered 3D images are not offered for every destination, but, the company says, they're offered for 16 different European city centers -- Paris, London, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Birmingham, Hamburg, Brussels, Luxembourg City, Frankfurt, Munich, Lisbon, Lyon, Naples, Nizza, and Vienna.

In other locations, the 8410 and 8450 still offer "Panorama View 3D" (above left) and "Reality View Pro" (above right) displays, in addition to more conventional 2D maps and routing information. On the 8450, there's also access to live weather and speed camera information, as well as Google Local Search, Navigon says. In Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, the 8450 even provides real-time information on the number of free spaces in nearby parking lots, the company adds.

Navigon says the 8410 and 8450 also incorporate voice recognition, and can respond to colloquial sentences such as "Where is the nearest Italian restaurant?" If a telephone number or a contact name is spoken, the PNDs will also dial cellular phones to which they are connected via Bluetooth, according to the company.

It's said the 8410 and 8450 have TMC (traffic message channel) receivers, capable of receiving real-time traffic information in most European countries. The devices also include media players -- capable of showing films, playing music, or displaying a digital photo album -- plus optional TV receivers, says Navigon.

Screen resolution for the PNDs is not specified, but both include 256MB of RAM, 4GB of flash storage, and a bundled 2GB microSD card, according to Navigon. The devices run Windows CE on a SiRF Titan SoC (system on chip), which includes a 600MHz ARM11 core and a 40-channel GPS receiver.

Features and specifications listed by Navigon for the 8410 and 8450 include the following:

        • Processor -- SiRF Titan clocked at 600MHz

While Navigon did not announce pricing or availability for the 8410 or 8450, the devices appear to be available now, and the 8450 reportedly sells for 500 Euros (approximately $728). U.S. customers will not be offered these devices, however, since Navigon pulled out of the North American market earlier this year.
