Qualnetics unveiled a new benchmarking tool for Windows CE at the Microsoft Windows Embedded Developers' Conference (DevCon) this week in San Diego. The company says Q-Bench can assist software and hardware developers in testing and optimizing graphics, file input/output, memory operations, and overall system performance.

The package supports systems running Windows CE version 3.0 through the new version 5.0.

Q-Bench includes diagnostics for Memory, CPU, FileSys, GDI Graphics, and DirectDraw -- each with numerous parameters, according to Qualnetics. The following processors are currently supported: ARMV4, ARMV4I, MIPS, PPC, SH3, SH4, StrongARM, XScale, and x86.

The product is offered in two versions:
        • Q-Bench Lite -- A free, limited-functionality version specific to the Pocket PC platform.

        • Q-Bench Pro -- A full-featured version that adds support for a broad range of Windows CE and Windows Mobile embedded platforms. Pro is expected to be available in Q3 of this year.
Qualnetics says that prior to releasing Q-Bench as a commercial product, it had already been using it in its own client projects. In one instance, Q-Bench helped to reduce CPU usage in a serial driver by as much as 80 percent. In another case, it helped improve the performance of the DirectDraw API display driver 10 times over the stock Windows CE sample code.
