Readers begin by learning how UML is used to model the structure of a system. Many key UML concepts, especially that of the general (classes) versus the specific (objects), are illustrated in the chapter on class and object diagrams. Next, readers learn how to use use-case diagrams to model the functionality of a system. Finally, they learn how component and deployment diagrams are used to model the way in which a system is deployed in a physical environment.According to Sinan Si Alhir, the book's author, when readers have finished Learning UML, they will understand how to use the various UML diagrams and their elements based on what they want to communicate and what each diagram emphasizes. "They will also have gained insight into the rationale behind the language and how different pieces of the language fit together," says Alhir, "rather than be left with the perception that the UML is a hodgepodge of different types of diagrams without any underlying scheme.
