Nokia and AT&T announced a high-end, "exclusive" Windows Phone handset that will support downloads at up to 50Mbps on the latter's LTE (long term evolution) network. The Lumia 900 includes a 4.3-inch display, an eight megapixel main camera with Carl Zeiss optics, a one megapixel front-facing camera, and a 1/4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8055 processor, according to the companies.

According to Nokia, its new Lumia 900 was "built exclusively for AT&T" and suppports the high-speed LTE data transfers available on that company's network. Downloads via LTE take place at up to 50Mbps, with HSPA fallback at up to 21Mbps, the company says.

The Lumia 900 resembles the company's earlier, internationally offered Lumia 800 in both design and construction -- a polycarbonate unibody is offered in either cyan or black -- but is larger. While the screen resolution is still 800 x 480 pixels, it now measures 4.3 inches diagonally instead of 3.7 inches, says Nokia.

The Lumia 900 (above) once again has an eight megapixel main camera with Carl Zeiss optics and F2/2 sensitivity, but it also gets a one megapixel front-facing camera, for use with the included "Tango" videoconferencing application. Both cameras capture video at 30fps, and the main unit does so at 720p, Nokia adds.

Nokia says the Lumnia 900 is powered by a 1.4GHz, single-core APQ8055 processor. As with the Lumia 800, there's 512MB of RAM, 16GB of flash storage, but no microSD expansion slot.

According to Nokia, the "souped-up" battery in the '900 will provide about seven hours of talk time and up to 300 hours standby. If you switch to flight mode and use the phone just as an MP3 music player, it'll keep going for more than two-and-a-half days, the company says.

Specifications listed by Nokia for the Lumia 900 include:

        • Processor -- Qualcomm PQ8055 clocked at 1.4GHz
        • Display -- 4.5-inch AMOLED screen with 800 x 480 resolution
        • Camera -- 8 megapixel rear-facing; 1 megapixel front-facing
        • Memory -- 512MB of RAM
        • Storage -- 16GB of flash
        • Wireless:
          • WAN -- GSM/EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/1900/2100, LTE Band 4 (1700/2100) & 17 (700)
          • LAN -- 802.11b/g/n
          • GPS
          • PAN -- Bluetooth 2.1
          Other I/O:
          • Micro-USB port (USB 2.0)
          • 3.5mm AHJ headset connector
        • Battery:
          • 1840mAh
          • talk time -- seven hours
          • standby time -- 300 hours
          • music playback -- 36 hours
        • Dimensions -- 5 x 2.7 x 0.45 inches
        • Weight -- 5.6 ounces
In a statement sent to WindowsForDevices.com, Ovum analyst Jan Dawson said, "This device signals several things: firstly, that Nokia is serious about the US, launching arguably the flagship Lumia device in the US before the rest of the world; secondly, that Nokia has the clout with Windows Phone to allow it to be first to market with an LTE device; and thirdly, that AT&T is now seriously into the business of offering LTE phones."

"The device will get significant marketing support from Nokia and AT&T, and therefore has the best opportunity of any Windows Phone launched to date to do well in the market. However, that's not to say it will be a blockbuster: the exact timing and pricing will be major factors too, and those have not been announced yet," Dawson added.
