Nokia will offer a mobile mapping and navigation platform as a free download, beginning Feb. 10. "Smart2go" initially supports "selected" Windows Mobile 5.0 and Nokia S60 devices, and offers mapping and routing data for over 150 countries and supports turn-by-turn satellite navigation in over 30 countries, according to the company.

Nokia describes smart2go as a "hybrid" approach to navigation. Map data from Tele-Atlas and Navteq can be downloaded directly via wireless network, GPRS, 3G, or WLAN, and stored on the device's memory card as needed. If all the desired map data fits on the device, no subsequent network connection is needed for mapping, routing, and navigation, according to the company.

The platform is said to contains over 15 million points of interest, including interesting sights, restaurants, and accommodations. Users can send favorite locations -- as well as map excerpts and routes -- to friends by Bluetooth wireless, infrared, multimedia message, or email.

Nokia says that recognized brand names such as McDonald's will be offered the opportunity to place branded icons on the maps.

Smart2go can be upgraded to a full fledged turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation system. Various license terms are available ranging from one week to three years. Nokia suggests that when traveling to a new country on vacation, a user can download the relevant maps and subscribe to the navigation service for the duration of the vacation.

Nokia says it has plans to roll out support for "most of the major mobile OS platforms" including additional Windows Mobile devices and Linux. Smart2go is expected to be available for download here, beginning Feb. 10.
